The Huxi temporary waste transfer station in Douliu currently holds nearly 20,000 tons of garbage, with the bottom layers having been piled up for over two years. To address the waste issue, the Douliu City Office has secured funding from the Yunlin County Government for a waste-packing solution. This involves crushing and compressing the waste, then wrapping it in layers of specially designed combustible film to contain odors and reduce the space needed for temporary storage. The goal is to maintain environmental hygiene and alleviate the problems caused by the garbage mountain for nearby residents.
Douliu City Mayor Lin Sheng-jue explained that the city's waste management system involves collecting garbage with the Douliu City sanitation team and transporting it to designated treatment facilities assigned by the Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB). However, due to the lack of waste processing facilities in Yunlin County, the city has relied on facilities in other counties for treatment in recent years.
Lin noted that the EPB currently allocates a daily waste processing capacity of 80 to 100 tons to Douliu City, with 60 tons specifically dedicated to dealing with old waste at the Huxi temporary waste transfer station. The remaining capacity is insufficient to fully handle the daily waste collected, prompting the city office to seek approval for the packing method to mitigate the impact on residents.
Douliu City sanitation team leader Huang Yidong stated that the packing project at the Huxi temporary waste transfer station is nearing completion, with an estimated 7,000 tons packed in the first phase. Continuous waste transfer operations are expected to handle more than half of the total waste volume by the end of the year. Additionally, efforts will continue to secure further funding to complete the packing of the remaining stored waste.
Mayor Lin Sheng-jue, along with County Councilor Lai Shuyuan and other relevant personnel, visited the site to monitor progress. Lin emphasized that, in addition to the packing process, the Douliu City Office is also promoting environmental volunteer teams and food education programs. The aim is to reduce waste at the source through effective garbage sorting and food waste recycling, addressing the garbage issue in Douliu at its root.
